Abydos Temple/Temple of Set

Abydos Temple/Temple of Set. The Temple of Abydos is a archealogical Egyptian Temple. Which was constructed by King Set1, who was the Second King of the Nineteenth Dynasty and Father of King Ramses II. It is a Funerary Temple that Seti I placed within an all embracing Wall, it is believed to be the place where the Ancient Tomb of the God Osiris is included. Back in it’s time the the Temple was enclosed by Gardens which were planted with Flowering Plants and Trees. The location of Abydos Temple is approx.. two and a half hours by car North of Luxor and Abydos was one of the more important Religious Sites to Ancient Egyptians. Similar to the Modern Muslims aspiriations to complete a Pilgrimage to Mecca at least once in their Lifetime if they can, Ancient Egyptians would have the same aspirations to take a visit to Abydos, which to their beliefs was very strongly associated with the entry into the Afterlife. Despite several Temples that were built here, the largest and most outstanding is known as the Temple of Seti I, Seti I, being the Father of the Great Ramesses II, who actually finished the construction of most of the Temples after the Death of his Father. Entering into Power after only thirty years of the disruption which was associated with Akhenaten’s heretical Rule, which was known as the Amarna Period, Set I was anxious to reestablish Faith in the Pantheon of pre-Amarna Gods that Akhenaten had set out to destroy. As an outcome the Temple he constructed includes small Chapels which were dedicated to each of the Major Gods, who were Ptah, Re-Harakahte, Amun-Re, Osiris, Isis and Horus, plus one to Seti Himself. Unfortunately most of the Temple Complex is no longer around, and this includes the Pylon and the first two courtyards, visitors enter through a doorway into the Hypostyle Hall. A good deal of the Wall Reliefs which are inside are very well preserved and the Reliefs which are towards the back of the Temple, which were completed during Seti’s reign, are thought to be among the most exceptional in any Temple throughout Egypt. Being that Abydos is more problematic to reach than many other Sitesm it is not very frequently visited. On occasions Tour Buses will come from the Beach Resorts or with Passengers on the Cruise Ships coming from the Red Sea, so if you time your visit just right tou may find that you can enjoy viewing the Temple Complex to yourself. You can include a Day Trip from Luxor along with a visit to Dendara easily which is another impressive but not too frequently visited Site.
