Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo The Temple of Lom Ombo is dedicated to two Gods, the Crocodile God Sobek and the God Horus. The word Kom in Arabic means the Small Hill and the word Ombo in the Ancient Egyptian Language of the Hieroglyphics means Gold. So the Word Kom Ombo means the Hill OF THE Gold. Kom Ombo is famous in the present day for being built during the Greco Roman Era and many Ancient Burial Sites were unearthered in and around Kom Ombo. Kom Ombo being the third crucial stop as well as Edfu and Esna is one that most of the Nile Cruises between Luxor and Aswan make. Kom Ombo being located approx.. thirty miles North of Aswan it also males it very easy to visit Kom Ombo by car for a day trip. The position of the Temple of Sobek the Crocodile God makes a passage by water the much better way to visit the site. The Temple which is settled ontop of a High Cliff in a very picturesque setting which lies alongside the River no longer has any Crocodiles in the River or in the Sacred Lake which is inside the Temple Complex, but it is still worthy of a visit. Kom Ombo which dates from the Ptolomaic Dynasty the same as the other two Sites between Luxor and Aswam, and was only completed under the Roman Command. The Temple which consists of a twin dedication to Sobek, as well as Horus and the plan of the Temple suggests the twin impetus. It is an aligned reflector of itself along the main Axis, with one section being dedicated to each of the two Gods it honors. The Pylon entrance to the Temples which is the same at Esna is no longer standing, which leaves the Hypostyle Hall as the main characteristic that the Visitor will see in the present Day. On the Grounds of the Temple is a Crocodile Museum which displays many Crocodile Mummies.
