LAKE NASSER ATTRACTIONS. Lake Nasser is a vast Freshwater Reservior formed by the construction of the High Dam at Aswan in the 1960s. Extending South from Aswan approx.. 550 km beyond the Southern Boarder of Egypt into Northern Sudan. A smaller Dam which was completed by the British Colonial Government in 1902 was insufficient to control the flow of the River so the High Dam replaced it in 1960 as part of a major development , the construction of the High Dam began under President Gamal Abdel Nasser. The Dam provided flood protection throughout the Nile Valley as well as increasing electricity and agricultural production. The rising waters of the Lake forced the replacement of many Nubian people in Northern Sudan and Egypt, and many Monuments including Abu Simbel Temples were under threat. Many of the Monuments threatened by the rising Waters were relocated to Higher Ground. The High Dam Project still stands to this day as an Engineering Miracel and the vast Reservoir provides an extension of Water in the very dry climate of Southern Egypt. Lake Nasser proves to be a gateway to the South, used by Lake Nasser Crruise Ships which carries Tourists from Aswan to visit many Monuments along its Banks, i.e. Abu Simbel, Kalabasha Temple, Philae Temple Qasir Ibrim, olus the Waters of the Lake is the only one where you can still see the Great Nile Crocodile. If Nature is one of the things you enjoy you can take a small boat Safari and see the impressive varaieties of Birds, Mammals and Reptiles. The Lake provides a very important point for the Birds who have their twice annual Migration between Africa and Europe. The preditors are Monitor Lizards , Hyenas, Desert Fox also Dorcas Gazelle and other Mammals you will find which inhabit the Islands and Shoreline. Fishing in Lake Nasser. Fishing on Lake Nasser has become very popular since the construction of the High Dam. You can catch Nile Perch which have been recorded at record sizes, you will also find the Moonfish, Catfish and Giant Vundu. You can take Fishing Excursions to reach remote areas for Private fishing, or Day Trips for Anglers who wish just to relax and fish. Fishing is also done from the Smaller Boats and and also you can fish from the actual Shore. Temple of Amada. The Temple of Amada is the oldest of the Monuments you will find around Lake Nasser. Approx. 110 Miles South of the High Dam it dates back to the 18th. Dynasty of the New Lingdom. The Temple which predates Abu Simbel and Ramses II by approx.. Two Hundred Years. Typical of the Great Pharaoh of Egypt Ramses mark and his son Merenptah can be found inside. Kalabsha Temple. Kalabsha Temple is often the first stop for any Cruise on Lake Nasser and is located within the view of the High Dam, after having been moved from it s original location approx.. 30 miles to the South after the construction of the Dam. Completed under the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus the actual construction of the Temple began at the end of the Ptolemaic Dynasty, The Temple which was dedicated Nubian God Mandulis includes Roman and Egyptian themes showing Roman Emperors and Pharaohs worshipping the Egyptian Gods. Connected to the rest of the Complex by a wall it has a large Pylon which creates a closed space. With Stairs leading up to the Roof it offers a fabulous view of the Lake and back up to the High Dam. Qasr Ibrim. The only Monument around the Lake to have remained in it s original Location Qasr Ibrim is a rocky Island in the middle of Lake Nasser. Qasr Ibrim used to guard over a flourishing City, but unfortunately the Lake submerged most of the Ruins. Throughout the Middle Ages this area rose to prominence that the most noticibleruins which are visible on the Island are actually what is left of a Great Cathedral which once stood there.Inhabited until the Mid 19th. Centurary the area then fell into neglect.
