Nubian Museum The Nubian Museum was revealed in 1997, and is a late but accomplished tribute to the influence and Culture of Nubia and the Nubian People on the Egyptian History. The Ancient Culture of Nubia which is as old as Ancient Egypt.It existed along the Banks of the River Nile for a Thousand Years in the Areas which is known as Southern Egypt and Northern Sudan in the present Day. The construction of the High Dam almost destroyed Ancient Nubia by completely submerging it, plus having to relocate more than 100,000 People. The Museum consists of a collection of Artifacts from the Nubian Region, which unfolds the story of the evolution of civilization in in the Southern Nile Valley before recorded events extending through the Pharaonic ages, the entry of Christianity and Islam and the Construction of the High Dam in the 1960’s. The predicament of the Nubia People is a highly politicized subject. Being in a hurry to develop the Country in the 1950’s and 60’s, the Egyptian Government did not provide adequate compensation or a reasonable plan to relocate the people whose livlihoods were traumatised by projects such as the High Dam. The protection of the Nubiam Culture legacy was also neglected. Global Corporations entered and began to remove some of the most famous Monuments of Nubia to higher ground. For example the Abu Simbel Temples. More were taken apart and shipped overseas as means of compensation for helping this effort, one such Monument which was gifted is the Dendar Temple which is housed in the New York Metropolitan Museum. The Nubian Musem was planned to help correct the dishonesty, while may not be at all possible for this to be done since it still makes no mention of the consequencies of the Dam for the Nubian People,it is very successful at unfolding the story of the Region and providing a glimpse of the Culture that carries on Today. The rebuilding of the Traditional Nubia Houses with the Artwork which was saved from Areas that are now submerged underwater are particularly eye catching. The Museum stands close to the Fatamid Cemetery which is full of small Mausoleums dating from the Nineth Century. Several of the Tombs here belong to Local Saints and are decorated accordingly with Flags and often visited by the Local People who are looking for Blessings. The Cemetary stands alongside to the Ancient Granite Quarry where the Unfinished Obelisk is to be found and is approx.. 140 feet in length. It would have been the most far reaching Obelisk ever to have been carved by the Ancient Egyptians. It was fully finished on three sides, but was left attached to the bedrock when a flaw in the Stone was uncovered. Taking a trip to these ywo locations along with the Nubian Museum would add to a Day of activities which are all located within a small Area which helps to decrease walking time.
