Kalabsha Temple

Kalabsha Temple. Kalabsha Temple dates back to the early Roman Era, and was constructed in the period of Emperor Augustus, and was also dedicated to the Gods Mandulis, Osiris and Isis. Before it was moved to it’s current location the Temple was to be found on the West Bank of the River Nile which is approx.. fifty five kilometers South of the Aswan Reservoir which was known in Ancient Egyptian as Tlemmus and became Talmis in Greek. The Temple includes scenes of the various Nuba deities . Also included are Demotic, Coptic and Greek inscriptions in addition to Christian inscriptions, all of these inscriptions refer to the different beleifs that followed this Temple. The Temple is depicted as one of the most complete Temples in Nubia in terms of the archeological elements and still retains it’s own Harbor, and the Walls are full with Ancient Wgyptian and Christian inscriptions after it was converted into a Church. There is some archeological evidence that dates back to the Temple’s origins to the Eighteenth Dynasty and the Ptolemaic Period. Kalabsha Temple which is located within view of the High Dam is usually the first stop for any Cruise on Lake Nasser, and it was moved to this location from the original location which was thirty miles to the South after the construction of the Dam. The Building of the Temple began at the end of the Ptolmaic Dynasty and was actually finalized under the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus. The result is a fascinating mixture of effects which includes Egyptian and Roman Themes, including images of Roman Emperors and Pharaohs worshipping the Egyptian Gods. The Temple was dedicated to the Nubian God Mandulis. There is a large Pylon which is attached to the rest of the Complex by a wall and this creates a closed space. There are Stairs which lead up to the Roof and offers an amazing view of the Lake and back up to the High Dam.
