Rommel Museum in Alexandria. Rommel Museum is one of the most important archeological and Tourist Attractions in the City of Marsa Matrouh. The Museum is a Cave carved out by Nature into the bottom of the Mountain, and it dates back to the Greco Roman Period, in the form of an Arch with an entrance and exit at both ends and overlooks Rommel Beach. During World War II, German General Rommel chose the Cave as his Headquarters . The Museum includes rare collectables of Commander Rommel, which includes his Coat, Medals and necklaces which Hitler gave him for his courage. The German Commander who was nicknamed the Desert Fox, fought with his Forces the Famous Battle of El Alamein in World War II and withdrew his Forces and Equipment with minimal losses in front of the Eighth Army of the Allied Forces which was led by General Montgomery. However it is Historically known that the German Military Commander Erwin Rommel did not pass through the City of Marsa Matrough at all but came from Lybia through the Siwa Oasis and then onto the El Alamein Area. Rommel was born on November the fifteenth eighteen ninety one, and died by suicide on October the fourteenth nineteen forty four. This Museum occupies a Cave that was once used as Headquarters by Rommel when he conducted the North African War. Originally cut in the Roman Period the Cave was used to stor Grains due to the ideal position on the Paraetonium Ancient Seaport, however it has now been turned into a Military Museum, and it is also famous for the British, Italian and German Cemeteries. The Museum contains several possessions of the German Commander, such as his Compass, Overcoat , photographs, maps and clothes trunks. Rommel’s Son donated many of the Museum contents. The Egyptian Supreme Council for antiquities agreed with the Chairmanship of Egyptian Ministers of Culture Farouk Hosni on specifying five million Dollars for a Museum on German General Erwin Rommel in Matrouh City, an important Site in World War II History as it was taken by the famous German Leader to run Military Operations. The artifacts related to Rommel include Personal belongings , such as Military Clothes, his tools, wireless, a phone device and a Group of Maps which carry his Signature. Hosni stated that the Family of Rommel agreed to the Egyptian plan for developing the Museum with a promise of developing the Museum by providing some of the Personal belongings of Rommel in addition to a Group of Rare Photos as well as Cinema Shots about his Life and World War II.
